Sacramento River Cats 6, Chihuahuas 5
Key Stats: RHP Matt Waldron 6 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 5 Ks; RHP Alek Jacob (L, 4-2), IP, 2 ER, 2 H, BB, 2 K; C Luis Campusano 1-for-3, RBI; LF Tirso Ornelas 1-for-3, 2B, 2 R; RF Yonathan Perlaza 1-for-4, 1B, RBI
Prospect Watch: For the second straight night, the Chihuahuas rallied to score in the ninth and get the tying run on base, but they lost once again. Tirso Ornelas had a 1-for-3 night that featured a double and two runs scored. Ornelas’ double in the top of the ninth was a loud one, logging an exit velocity of 109.2 mph. Exit velocities like that have eluded Ornelas this season, when his 86.7 mph average exit velocity ranks in just the 32nd percentile among Triple-A hitters. Meanwhile, his 34.9% hard hit rate sits in the 26th percentile. He owns a .815 OPS and 98 wRC+ for El Paso this season. … No, Luis Campusano did not homer Thursday night. However, he collected one base knock to secure a 1-for-3 night and extend his hitting streak to ten games. While it’s uncertain if Campusano will see another stint in the big leagues this season, the 26-year-old has continued to hammer the ball. He owns a 93.8 mph average exit velocity, 56.4% hard hit rate, and a 14.9% barrel rate, all of which rank in the 98th percentile or better among Triple-A hitters… Knuckleballer Matt Waldron worked six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, walking two, and striking out five. He logged seven swings and misses and a 35% whiff rate with the knuckeball, which he only used 41 times among 96 pitches. Waldron’s sweeper also proved to be effective, getting three whiffs on six swings. It averaged -13.3 inches of horizontal break while spinning at 2029 RPM. … Ron Marinaccio worked a clean eighth inning, allowing one hit while striking out two. Marinaccio’s changeup was without a doubt his standout offering of the night. It averaged 16.0″ horizontal break and -2.9 inches of induced vertical break to generate a 50% chase rate and 67% whiff rate.

Prospect Watch: Jagger Haynes made his second start since missing a turn in the rotation with shoulder soreness and made it through just one inning before hitting his pitch limit. The left-hander allowed two runs on two hits and two walks, and struck out one. He threw just 16 of his 30 pitches for strikes. Still, one positive was that Haynes was able to generate five whiffs on 10 Sod Poodles swings. … Andrew Moore worked two innings, allowing one run on three hits and struck out five as the second man out of the bullpen. Despite allowing the run, the right-hander was impressive. His fastball sat 96-97 mph and topped out at 98 with good vertical ride. At the same time, his slider flashed solid depth. In total, he logged nine whiffs and a 52.9% whiff rate. Moore’s raw stuff, at its peak, is exceptional, which is why he owns 30.4% strikeout rate this season. The question that continues to linger is whether he can improve his command. In 28 innings with San Antonio since the Padres acquired him from the Reds, his walk rate sits at an alarming 23.0%. … After a multi-hit evening Wednesday night in his Double-A debut, Ryan Jackson delivered an encore performance, as the USC alum went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. The 23-year-old continues to impress in his first full professional season in the San Diego system. Across three levels, Jackson owns a 126 wRC+, .385 wOBA, and 16.9% walk rate. … Another newcomer, Braedon Karpathios, also reached base twice Thursday night. While the 22-year-old went 0-for-3, he drew two walks. Karpathios’ eye remains one of the more impressive parts of his offensive profile. In 444 plate appearances this season between High-A and Double-A, he owns a 15% walk rate, helping him boast a 125 wRC+ and .378 wOBA.

Lamar King Jr. (Photo: Ryan Cox)
Prospect Watch: Lamar King Jr. played only in game one of the TinCaps’ Thursday doubleheader, but the 21-year-old went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. King’s second double of the afternoon in the top of the ninth proved to be the game-winner, scoring Eguy Rosario to make it a 3-2 game. In 13 games since his promotion to High-A, King has not looked overmatched. While the power and raw run production numbers haven’t been eye-popping – his .825 OPS translates to a 107 wRC+ – he has made consistent contact. He is hitting .289 with an 85.4% in-zone contact rate for Fort Wayne. … In game one of the doubleheader, Clark Candiotti turned in his longest outing since May 28. Working four innings, he allowed one run on five hits while striking out five without a walk. Candiotti’s split-finger was effective, flashing good late arm-side fade. He also utilized his mid-80s gyro-slider to generate whiffs against right-handers. He tallied eight total whiffs and a 26.6% whiff rate. Last year’s fourth-rounder owns a 5.06 ERA with a 4.72 FIP, with a 27.5% strikeout rate. … Fernando Sanchez was excellent following Candiotti. The 24-year-old left-hander worked five innings as the scheduled seven-inning game went nine. He allowed two unearned runs on two hits, and struck out four. In 59 innings in Fort Wayne, he owns a 2.29 ERA, 3.08 FIP, and 4.05 xFIP. … TinCaps’ backstop Brendan Durfee led the way for the Fort Wayne offense in game two, going 2-for-2 with his second homer in six games as he collected three RBIs. Durfee, however, would be removed from the game before the bottom half of the third inning. His first full season has been a struggle as the UC Santa Barbara alum has posted a .307 wOBA, 82 wRC+, and .645 OPS in 80 games. Despite being older for the High-A level, Durfee has struggled to make consistent contact, posting a 74.4% in-zone contact rate and 34.3% whiff rate. … Third baseman Rosman Verdugo logged a multi-hit night, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Since July 1, the normally slug-heavy Verdugo has been in a power drought, slugging just .276 on a .065 isolated power rate. Verdugo has struggled all year to make consistent contact, posting a 67.1% in-zone contact rate and a 36.5% whiff rate.

Prospect Watch: Alex McCoy simply refuses to stop hitting. The big six-foot-five right fielder logged another 2-for-4 night. He was credited with a double in the first inning that should have been a home run. Instead, it was egregiously called a ground-rule double, despite very clearly clearing the wall in right field. A batter later, Carlos Rodriguez made it a moot point by crushing a home run that brought McCoy around to score. It was McCoy’s third multi-hit game in his last four starts. Since returning to Lake Elsinore on July 18, McCoy has posted a 191 wRC+, .500 wOBA, 1.106 OPS, while hitting .378. Perhaps most importantly, McCoy has cut down significantly on his strikeouts since returning from the IL, posting an 18% strikeout against a 13% walk rate in 104 plate appearances. … Kale Fountain went 1-for-4 with a single in the ninth inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games. Since August 12, the 20-year-old has begun to heat up, posting a 141 wRC+ and .415 wOBA while walking eight times. Fountain is most known for his 70-grade raw power, however, his plate discipline has perhaps impressed most with Lake Elsinore. Through 32 games, the Nebraska native owns a 13% walk rate and has only chased at a 24.7% rate. … Ryan Wideman, like Fountain, went 1-for-4 with a single in Thursday night’s loss. Wideman’s most impressive work on the night, though, came on the base paths, where the 2025 third-round selection swiped three bases. Swings and misses have been abundant early in Wideman’s minor league career as he has struck out at a 34.8% clip with a 34.6% whiff rate. … In his last start, Kannon Kemp had to be removed when he was struck in the face by a line drive. Fortunately, the young right-hander returned to the bump on Thursday and worked four innings. He allowed three runs, only two of which were earned, on five hits and two walks and struck out two. Kemp’s first healthy professional season has been rough as the 20-year-old has posted a 6.91 ERA, in 43 innings with the Storm, though his 4.90 FIP, and 4.82 xFIP are more encouraging. Kemp has struggled to generate consistent swing and miss stuff, posting only an 18% strikeout rate.
